Non-Toxic Living

My top ten favourite essential oils (and how to use them!)

Essential oils are a huge tool in the wellness world but can be very confusing at first. Sure they smell good but you may be wondering what else you can use them for besides diffusing and making your house smell good.  They do make your house smell amazing but I also use them in practically every area of my life from brushing my teeth and cleaning my home to cooking dinner.

I have these little bottles of wonder in every room of my house.  Each holding their own amazing scent and natural healing qualities.  It was hard to narrow it down to my top 10 essential oils as I genuinely use a wide variety of them.  I studied myself for a few days and took notes of the oils that I use most often in my everyday life.  When choosing an essential oil it very important to ensure the quality and purity of the oil (hint: dollar store/pharmacy oils are never good quality!) Do your research before using anything internally or on your skin, if unsure, always ask your health care provider.  These are simply my recommendations and what has worked for me and my family.

1. Frankincense

Frankincense is known as the king of oils due to its versatility. It can support immunity, inflammation, anxiety, ageing skin, digestion, pain relief and so many other things.  I personally use a drop in my moisturizer every morning to help combat acne and signs of ageing. I also put a drop on my toothbrush to help maintain oral health and a drop in my water to help support my immune system and digestion. It is also an anti-bacterial oil so works great in a homemade hand sanitizer.

2. Lavender

I’m sure at some point in your life you have smelled the wonderful scent of lavender.  It is my favourite oil to diffuse, as it causes an instant calming effect. Lavender promotes relaxation and reduces stress.   I add lavender to a spray bottle with some water and spray our pillows before bed, which brings us into a deeper, more relaxing sleep.  Lavender is also a natural anti-histamine which helps with seasonal allergies.  I add a few drops to a rollerball with some coconut oil on my son’s back which instantly relieves his runny nose due to the changing seasons.  Lavender is also an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.

3. Lemon

Lemon oil is great for adding to your water to promote cleansing and alkalinity in your body. It is high in vitamin C, helping to boost immunity.  I like to add it to blueberry muffins, giving them a burst of flavour.  I also like to add it to ionized water in a spray bottle to make a powerful all-purpose cleaner. Lemon oil is also an antifungal and great for wound healing and acne control.

4. Oregano

Oregano is my go-to whenever I or my son are getting sick. It pretty much stops whatever illness it is right in its tracks. The antibiotic properties of oregano are extraordinary.  The taste is less than pleasant, so I put a few drops in a vegetable-based capsule and swallow it with a glass of water.  For my son, I put a few drops in his water and hope for the best.   I also use a few drops in my sourdough and it tastes amazing, highly recommend!  Oregano oil is also an antioxidant, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory.  This oil is truly a powerhouse.

5. Lime

Lime oil gives a refreshing burst of energy to any boring glass of water.  It has liver cleansing abilities, giving your insides a bath.  Lime is high in vitamin C and antioxidants, giving your body a boost while supporting your immune system. I like to put a few drops into a glass of water on a normal day, but if I happen to have a beer or five, I like to put a drop right into my first drink of the night to support my liver.

6. Lemon Eucalyptus

This oil is one of my favourites simply because of the smell.  When diffused, my house instantly smells fresh and clean. I also add a drop to a spray bottle with my 6.0 PH ionized water and together they make the best non-toxic all-purpose house cleaner.  Lemon eucalyptus can also be used to repel mosquitos and ticks so is an amazing oil to pack in your camping bag.

7. Eucalyptus

I’m sure at one point or another in your life you have smelled the invigorating scent of eucalyptus. The smell just instantly relaxes you and brings your attention to your breath. I use eucalyptus in the shower by dropping a few drops on the shower floor and letting the steam take over.  This instantly opens up my lungs and allows me to breathe and focus on my breath while being present.  As a mom of a crazy toddler, I rarely get the chance to just breathe and take a minute to just be.  Since incorporating eucalyptus into my routine, I find that I am more grounded and patient.  Although it is only about 15 minutes of breath, it makes all the difference in the world to me. Eucalyptus is like a little spa break in a bottle.   When my household is sick, I like to infuse eucalyptus oil to help clear us all up and boost our immunity.

8. Tumeric

The health benefits of turmeric are endless but it is most commonly used to target inflammation. I start my day with a drop of turmeric oil in a litre of ionized water. It has a delicious spiciness to it that I actually look forward to.  Inflammation plays a huge role in the development of many diseases and is important to get under control as soon as possible. I also use my turmeric oil in my skincare, with one drop in my moisturizer to help brighten my complexion!

9. Ginger

Ginger oil is one of the most used oils in my house.  It is such a simple oil but so powerful.  Whenever my son has a stomach-ache, I put a drop or two in his cup with some water and notice an improvement in him within 10-15 minutes.  Whenever my husband and I have overeaten or not eaten the greatest that day, we put a couple of drops in our water, sit back and wait for this magic oil to bring us relief.  Ginger is also so helpful when battling indigestion, a stomach bug or food poisoning.  Sometimes I just use it simply because I love the taste! Ginger oil is also an anti-inflammatory and helps prevent wrinkles.

10. Rosemary

The smell of rosemary is said to instantly boost your memory, the simple inhalation of the oil can help you remember where you put your keys (or in my case, my credit card!). While it is great for memory, I personally use it for my hair.  Rosemary oil helps stimulate hair growth and prevents premature aging of your hair follicles. After giving birth to my son, I suffered with post-partum hair loss. Every time I would have a shower, I would notice clumps of hair falling out.  I had always had super thin hair to begin with, so believe me, it was noticeable.  A few months ago, I began adding rosemary oil to a spray bottle with water and spraying my hair before bed. I have noticed that my hair is not so thin and brittle and can finally see baby hairs coming in, slowly bringing me back to my pre-pregnancy hair.  Rosemary also helps with headaches, no toxic pain relievers in my house!

I am a first time boy mom, wife, self-published author and wellness connoisseur, trying to live a holistic lifestyle in the very small town of Moonstone, Ontario. I started this blog to share my passion (obsession) for natural, non-toxic living. Throughout this blog you will find inspiration to live your healthiest life, tips to switch to a natural, toxic-free lifestyle, honest and transparent motherhood, birth, breastfeeding, essential oils, help with getting started with Baby Led weaning and all other things “crunchy”. From teaching yoga, to making my own products and sourdough, to trying out veganism, buying an absurd amount of crystals, and trying many alternative medicines, I have dipped my toe in many aspects of the wellness world. I have also completed many courses in Herbalism, meditation, different types of yoga and Ayurveda.

Currently, I am studying to receive my Holistic Nutritionist (specializing in children’s nutrition) diploma. After giving birth to my son, I realized just how important living a natural, healthy lifestyle was. Feeding my son healthy, homemade organic foods is one of my favourite things to do. We began baby led weaning when he was six months old and our food journey has been nothing short of wonderful. This kid will eat practically everything I offer him (except broccoli). My goal is to share our journey and offer some support to new mamas and to assist with making their babies transition to food go smoothly. I also want to help mamas take care of themselves by supporting them with holistic nutrition consulting and meal planning. Mama’s health is just as important as babies, we must set a good example for our children by being the absolute best version of ourselves, they are always watching!

I look forward to meeting you and helping you start your holistic journey.
